This Kata helps you experience unexpected events more positively, like finding a hidden treasure.

Even good scientific thinkers can feel disappointment when things go differently than expected. But they quickly turn it around, laugh, and start deriving lessons from what just happened. They may even think, "Thank you, for revealing that to me."

It takes a little practice to counteract our natural tendency to view the unexpected as negative. You can do that by practicing this Starter Kata routine for a week.

All you need is one analog tally counter for each team member – the kind that make a 'click' sound as you count. Amazon sells batches of ~20 clickers for a low cost.

Here's the Kata (print out the instructions below):

  1. Start each day with the counter reset to zero (00).

  2. As you go through the day, notice when something goes differently than you expected.

  3. Add a click each time that happens.

  4. At the end of the day write down your total number of clicks for that day.

How many did you find each day?

Which were the most interesting?

Notice the change in how you feel about unexpected occurrences!

Once you have done the one-week clicker practice routine please fill out the short online feedback form.
